New Zealand Jet Creashes En Route to New York

MAR 19, 2011 BREAKING NOW
NEW YORK (KYODO) - A passenger jet operated by Air New Zealand has crashed near New York, in the US, killing at least 200, according to initial reports.

208 were aboard flight NZ821, including a 10-member crew, on a scheduled flight from Auckland, New Zealand, to New York.

Local eyewitnesses report the aircraft broke up upon impact, scattering debris over a wide area. Emergency services have started to secure the area and search for clues.

Earliest counts indicate that at least 8 people have been found alive. Rescuers are rushing the injured to local hospitals, including at least one military hospital in the vicinity.

Although the cause of the accident was unclear, authorities reportedly ruled out a terrorist attack. Ground witnesses are reported to have said the jet was flying erratically prior to impact.

A spokesperson for Air New Zealand has indicated a press conference will be held within an hour.
